Rates Rebate Scheme

A rates rebate is available to residential ratepayers. Entitlement depends on both income and the amount of rates. The income threshold for the maximum rebate of $550 for the 2009/10 year is $21,910 and is increased by $500 for each dependant in the household.

An applicant must pay the first $160 of rates. Thereafter, 2/3 (two thirds) of the rates may be paid by rebate with the rebate reduced by $1 for every $8 of income in excess of $21,910.

The scheme is administered by Councils but the criteria are set by Government. The Department of Internal Affairs has examples and an electronic calculator for checking eligibility. See

A rates rebate can only be sought for the current financial year and not for previous years, so it is important to apply annually and as early as possible in the new financial year to assist processing.

Many Councils are also able to postpone rates payments for ratepayers experiencing extreme financial hardship who own their own home. There is usually an application cost and requirement to apply annually. If you are experiencing financial hardship, contact your local Council.
